How to Raise Cross-Cultural Kids?
“Where are you from?” is one of the most common phrases we hear when meeting someone new in Dubai. If we grow up in our passport countries, we have a simple answer for that. But our children, who are growing up cross-culturally, may find it much more complicated to answer. Young people growing up outside their home countries find themselves navigating the many complexities of cultural identity and expectations.
We all have a story. We have a reason we moved our families abroad. Some of us have moved many times to many places. Others have stayed and struggled through too many goodbyes. We’ve all experienced culture shock. We’ve all missed the comforts of home, family, food (even while we still enjoy shawarmas). What’s your story? How can that story connect with other families who are moving to Dubai? How can we help one another find empathy and support as we all navigate the challenges of life abroad?
Come find out more about what research tells us about the challenges and benefits of raising families internationally. We will discuss ways that cultural transitions impact our children academically, socially and emotionally. We will also learn more about how these transitions affect us as parents, and what we can do to create stronger community in such a transient environment. As we share our stories with one another, we can learn from each other how to not just survive but to thrive in Dubai!
