Whether it is volunteering, trekking through the mountains overseas or speaking in front of a large crowd, students are given many opportunities to develop their personalities and explore their varied passions.
The extra-curricular activities at Sunmarke help channel students’ energies into developing new skills. These school-run activities conducted by our teaching staff, vary each term and year depending on availability and staffing.

Sunmarke believes in giving its students a voice and a platform to express their opinions and ideas freely. Accordingly, we help them sharpen their public speaking skills through various programmes.
With visits from the prestigious Oxford Union and being a host school for the world-renowned World Scholars Cup and TEDx talks, everyone has the chance to speak up and share their thoughts.
The World Scholars Cup is an international team academic programme, bringing together a community of future scholars and leaders from over 50 countries and diverse cultures, to discuss groundbreaking ideas relevant today and in the future.
Our students have participated in the Dubai Rounds, the Global Rounds in Vietnam and successfully qualified and participated at the Tournament of Champions hosted at Yale University in the USA. Students enjoyed visiting other Ivy League Universities too.
As an official TEDx event host, Sunmarke hosts community-based discussions to spark ideas and connections. The first TEDx event held at Sunmarke School – themed #YouAreHere – was an epic occasion where 14 talented and poised Sunmarke speakers living in the “Now” shared their visions of the future.
Students embark on many residential adventures in Secondary and Sixth Form. We have close partnerships with Camps International and Ecoventure ME that offer regional and international trips for students throughout the academic year.
Sunmarke also offers The Duke of Edinburgh International Award (DofE International Award) which enriches our students’ lives with practical experiences, life skills and allows them to discover their hidden talents and capabilities.
The Duke of Edinburgh International Award, founded in 1956 by His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh is the world’s leading youth achievement award, bringing together experiences and life skills to equip young people for life.
The concept of the Award is of individual challenge designed to encourage young people between 14 and 25 to develop into responsible, active citizens who will contribute towards society.
The Award is voluntary, non-competitive, enjoyable and balanced, and requires students to expend effort over a period of time. There are three levels to the Award: Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Young people design their own Award programme, set their own goals and record their own progress. They can choose four categories: Service, Physical Recreation or a Skills activity, or go on an Expedition. Here are some more details of each segment.
The Award gives students the opportunity to give back to the community and make a real difference to the people or wildlife/animals, or to contribute to a good cause. It acquaints students with the joy of giving.
Examples include: first aid, visiting and supporting people in need, volunteering at hospitals, sports coaching, charity work, etc.
Physical Recreation, both individually and within a team, is a fun and healthy way of developing a real sense of achievement outside the classroom, instilling enthusiasm and feeling of wellbeing.
Examples include: Ball Sports, Athletics, Water Sports, Winter Sports, Martial Arts, Animal Sports, etc.
The Award encourages students to learn something new as a part of the process. Whether their interests lie in skiing or photography, the Award allows them to explore their passions.
Examples include: Music, Arts and Crafts, Nature and the Environment, Communication, Games and Sports and related skills, etc.
The Adventurous Journey section is about undertaking a team journey or expedition. Participants plan, train for and undertake a journey with a purpose in an unfamiliar environment. Students spend 2 days and 1 night away completing around 12 hours of purposeful effort in total.
“If you can speak, you can influence. If you can influence, you can change lives.” Toastmasters International, which has a legacy of 98 years will undoubtedly change your child’s life! At Sunmarke Gavel club, which is an affiliate of Toastmasters International, your child will get access to an International Acclaimed Public Speaking programme that will help your child get adequate public speaking skills for boosting their confidence and leadership. The program is open to students between the age of 12 to 18 years.
Volunteering is one of the greatest gifts we can give others.
Sunmarke’s student volunteers work closely with the Inclusion Department at the School to learn necessary skills to coach and assist their “buddies” during training sessions.
This peer-coaching programme draws upon our school’s core values and Positive Education ethos whereby confidence, physical skills and social communication skills for our athletes are built upon.
