Our Approach

Welcome to Sunmarke’s vibrant Sixth Form, where we achieve Outstanding results and offer the right balance of support, inspiration and challenge.

Whether you choose the A-Level, BTEC, International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme or International Baccalaureate Career-Related Programme, we inspire purpose in our students and drive passion – giving students the confidence to succeed in their next steps of life.

Our dynamic and innovative Sixth Form curriculum is embedded with the Positive Education philosophy and is designed to meet the needs, talents and interest of our students.

Sixth Formers at Sunmarke are able to immerse themselves into sports, drama, music, a wide variety of cultural pursuits, strong leadership opportunities, house competitions and rich extracurricular activities.

How do we get our young people thinking? How do we keep them thinking? How do we create an environment which encourages independent and critical thinking?

Our Positive Education approach continues into the Sunmarke Sixth Form enabling the students to continue flourishing, as they prepare to take their next steps in the world. Students are stretched through the Theory of Knowledge curriculum that encourages students to ask questions about the world around them and think from multiple perspectives.

All students in the Sunmarke Sixth Form are leaders and role models and fully embrace this responsibility.

Within their academics, students play an instrumental role in leading their own learning by choosing to take part in the Extended Project Qualification or Extended Essay.  Students have the opportunity to complete MOOCs and use our excellent online library enabling them to do further reading into areas of interest.

There are many opportunities for students to lead in whole school initiatives, form their own extra-curricular activities and represent the school through roles such as Senior Prefects, Senior Student Leadership Team, House Captains and Subject Ambassadors.  Leadership opportunities are designed to promote excellence, success, confidence, self-esteem whilst fostering an opportunity for our student leaders to have a pivotal role in the future development of the school and the community that we serve.

Sixth Form students model the use and integration of digital technologies throughout their curriculum.

Many digital tools are available and thoroughly utilised in our Sixth Form, such as Questia School, an online library student use to develop their research and academically honest approach to their studies and UniFrog a fundamentally important platform used to search, shortlist and apply for university courses.

Students are taught to be confident in their use of technology, but also to questions its validity, reliability and responsibility in a modern world. To be media literate is another important key to the wellbeing of our students as they prepare to navigate themselves beyond Sunmarke.

Sunmarke Sixth Formers take the lead in service learning, providing solutions for the community whilst developing collaboration, leadership and social skills in our young people.

There are structured programmes for the students to follow such as CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) and Service Learning, whereby there are a set of objectives for the students to use as guidance.

These are ‘need and solution-based’ programmes where students can choose to give service to their peers, the school, the local community and even make a global difference. Currently, the students partake in peer on peer mentoring, coaching at the Sports Heroes Academy and they have even travelled to Kenya to offer service at local camps. It is important that our students understand the difference they can make whilst intrinsically developing their emotional intelligence and self-esteem.

In order to encourage international mindedness in our students, we foster an ethos of honesty, responsibility, tolerance and respect for others within the academic and Positive Education curriculum.

Sixth Form students take a leading role in celebrations such as International Day and by sharing their own cultures and traditions with the community.

As a multi-pathway school, we aim to make our students’ global citizens ready to study anywhere they choose in the world. The option to choose between the traditional British curriculum and the International Baccalaureate qualifications allows students to pursue study anywhere in the world. The combination of academic qualifications, life skills and Positive Education means Sunmarke Sixth Formers are knowledgeable, yet caring young people ready to go out there and change the world.

At Sunmarke, we wish that all our students have a successful learning journey and choose the right path for their future.

We have designed below listed booklet to give information to our students about the courses they could study in Years 10 and 11. We hope that you will find it both interesting and useful as a guide to choosing the right options as well as a reference throughout the two year IGCSE, GCSE or BTEC Level 2 programmes. It will tell you at a glance the areas of study within each subject and can be used to support the teaching and learning that takes place in school.

At Sunmarke, we care about the journey that students go on and the skills they develop along the way.

We have designed the below booklet to inform and support our students on the multiple pathways available to them. We are unique in offering A Levels, BTECs, and being an IB world school, we also offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and the International Baccalaureate Career Related Programme. Because we offer these different pathways, it is important for you to understand each one so you can make an informed decision as to which pathway suits your needs best.
