Sunmarke School Celebrates Exceptional UK Curriculum Exam Results in OxfordAQA’s First Go Further Awards

Students from Sunmarke School have been confirmed as award winners in the 2019 Go Further Awards.

The awards recognise students with the highest marks in OxfordAQA International GCSE, AS and A Levels. They also recognise students with the best coursework projects and students who surpassed expectations by demonstrating resilience and effort.

The award winning students from Sunmarke School were Zhiyin Ying who won Top in World in International AS Business and Ruben Melikyen who was awarded with the Best GCSE Plus Project.

Teachers of these students Mr Richard Bishop and Miss Lianne Brown also received special recognition from OxfordAQA in a letter from the exam board’s Managing Director Sadie Visick, who said: “We’re very proud to celebrate the achievements of our Go Further Award winning students and recognise the hard work and dedication they put into their studies.

“We feel it’s also important to recognise the contribution of their teachers and school staff, whose passion and commitment enabled these top-performing students to achieve their potential.

Mr Jason King, Head of Secondary at Sunmarke School, commented on the good news: “We are extremely proud of our students’ achievements. This achievement is a reflection of the dedication to high standards from our students, teachers together with the support from our parents. The variety of opportunities available to our students to enable them to excel in these subjects is a result of the entrepreneurial drive within the school for all our students.

Mr Ed Miller, Head of the Business & Economics Department added: “Each of these awards from Oxford AQA are a fantastic achievement for the Zhiyin, Ruben and Wen Lin, who should feel extremely proud of their achievements and it is just reward for their dedication to the subject. I would also like to thank their teachers who I know went above and beyond to prepare the students in their respective Business qualifications.”

Zhiyin Ying, one of the award-winning students, shared her delight: “I sincerely thank Oxford AQA for honoring me with this Top in the World for AS Business. I can’t express how grateful I am for receiving this award. It is such an honor and privilege. Preparing for this exam was really stressful, because I also had two other exams. However, with consistent revision, exam practice and feedback from my teacher, I was making significant improvements. I especially want to thank my Business teacher, Miss. Brown, she does so much more than just teaching me business. Thanks to her patience, guidance, inspiration, and passion for Business, these have all allowed me to achieve beyond my expectations”.

To conclude the winners, Wen Lin Kwok, also a Sunmarke student in Academic Year 2018-19, was awarded with the Top in World for International GCSE Business. The reformed UK GCSEs in particular are now more demanding, with a new Grade 9 to differentiate students at the very top of the ability range.

OxfordAQA’s International GCSEs are benchmarked to this new ‘gold standard’, which means that the achievement of Wen Lin Kwok is all the more remarkable.

It is an exciting week for Sunmarke’s Business and Economics Department as a whole – from receiving this incredible news to preparing Business and Economics students who will participate in the DEWA Business Cup Challenge taking place this weekend (November 16, 2019) at Curtin University, Dubai.

Sunmarke’s team ‘Augustine’s Angel’s’ have qualified as 1st place out of 230 teams across all Secondary schools in Dubai.

The Challenge so far has provided over 1,200 students the chance to test their skills in solving a number of business case studies. The final case study happening on November 16th, will challenge the students to propose a novel use of Artificial Intelligence for DEWA (Dubai Electricity & Water Authority).

The top five teams will present their proposal live on stage at the Emirates Institute for Banking and Financial Studies Auditorium before a panel of expert judges.

In addition to other prizes, the winning teams will secure an opportunity to gain practical work experience through internships with DEWA, Curtin Dubai and Hunter Foods, one of the event’s sponsors.

Good luck team Sunmarke and well done to all First Go Further Award winners and teachers!
