Three simple tips to ensure good mental health

As we begin Children’s Mental Health Week (3-9 February 2020), we spotlight the importance of children and young people’s mental health. This year’s theme is Find your Brave.

Here are Mr Alistair Dale’s, School Counsellor & Wellbeing Coach, Sunmarke School, tips on looking after your child and family’s emotional wellbeing:

1) Eating higher-quality, whole-foods is important to maintain good mental health. Low-quality diets and food restricting diets can see an increase of depression of around 80% and attention-deficit disorder (ADD) doubles.

2) We know that physical exercise is good for the body but it is also essential for positive mental health. Exercise is a powerful depression fighter. It promotes feelings of calm and well-being. It also releases endorphins, powerful chemicals in your brain that energise your spirits and make you feel good. Finally, exercise can also serve as a distraction, allowing you to find some quiet time to break out of the cycle of negative thoughts that feed depression.

3) Humans are social and socialising has a positive impact on our mental health. Interacting with others boosts feelings of well-being and decreases feelings of depression. Spend more time around friends and family with less distractions from screen-based items.
